Acting as catalyst or instigator, Jeremy Deller creates provocative works about social history or recent events that encourage us to look at one kind of ‘culture’ through the lens of another. The History of the World flow diagram maps ‘a thought process in action’ which connects traditional Brass Bands with Acid House music. The work shows that the two musical forms have a lot in common; they are both types of British folk music with strong northern roots, and have at times been associated with civil disorder. The Battle of Orgreave documents a re-enactment of an actual, violent conflict during the 1984/5 miner’s strike. The installation It Is What It Is originated as a project to provoke conversations about Iraq. Its centrepiece is the tangled, burnt-out corpse of a car which was destroyed in a bomb explosion in Baghdad.

—

A hugely influential artist for much of the past two decades, Turner Prize- winner Jeremy Deller has helped to rewrite the rules of contemporary art in many respects.
This mid-career survey – the first in the artist’s career – provides a fresh overview of his multi-faceted work.

The exhibition incorporates almost all of his major works to date including installations, photographs, videos, posters, banners, performance works and
sound pieces.

The exhibition is curated by Ralph Rugoff, Director, Hayward Gallery.

The exhibition will present paintings and sculptures by Marc Quinn throughout the halls of the Museum, the front courtyard and on the panoramic terrace.

Quinn has worked closely with the Oceanographic Museum and immersed himself in its space and atmosphere and in the diversity of its collections. His exhibition is intended to reflect the vision of Prince Albert I (founder of the museum) who expressed his wish “to gather together in one place the two driving forces of civilization: art and science”.

The exceptional works by Marc Quinn are brought together and displayed among the remarkable collection of marine specimens and underwater fauna. Displayed in parallel, both the disciplines of art and science will reinforce each other mutually. Their juxtaposition will show the artist’s body of work, the collections of the Museum and the Aquarium in a new light, creating alternative perspectives for the viewer.

The Oceanographic Museum of Monaco is intended to be a place for mediation between science, politics and socio-economics for the general public. It is a place of exchange and culture, which confronts experiences concerning the protection of the oceans and the common heritage of mankind. Since 2010 the Museum has asked renowned international artists to enrich the its mission through the originality of their perspective.

Built on the side of the Rock of Monaco, the Museum has overlooked the oceans for over a century. It was designed as a palace solely dedicated to the sea, displaying the results of the oceanographic exploration campaigns carried out by its founder, Prince Albert I of Monaco (great grandfather of Sovereign Prince Albert II of Monaco) to further disseminate knowledge of the sea and raise awareness about the fragility of ocean life.

An international reference point for all lovers of the marine world, it has a large collection of marine specimens and houses a well-known aquarium, bringing together more than 4,000 species of fish and invertebrates. Its “Shark Lagoon”, a giant 400,000-litre tank, reveals the extraordinary diversity of the coral reef.

April 27 – September 9, 2012

The Deichtorhallen in Hamburg, Germany will mount a spectacular installation by Antony Gormley especially created for the institution. Titled Horizon Field Hamburg, the installation divides the space in two by creating a secondary floor suspended 25 feet in the air, thus inviting the viewer to interrogate their relationship to and interaction with space. As Gormley explains: “There is a double bind here. We have a real choice of how we wish to participate … We can stay in an underworld or climb skywards. Both scenarios put the human subject into a dynamic position of jeopardy.”

Corpos Presentes – Still Being is the first major exhibition of Antony Gormley’s work in South America and will focus on the themes of body as space and space as object that have been central to the practice of the artist over the last 40 years.

ADAM MCEWEN : 13 April – 28 July

The Goss-Michael Foundation is pleased to present an exhibition by British artist Adam McEwen. The exhibition will open to the public on Friday, April 13 and continue through Saturday, July 28 2012

McEwen’s show consists of different media including sculpture, painting, and installation. His work resides somewhere between the celebratory and the funereal. It identifies strands of European melancholy in the Pop object, and the scuffs of history and consumerism on the sheened surfaces of minimalism represented through his sculptures, made of machined graphite.

McEwen’s work often aims to shake us temporarily out of our passive acceptance of mass media and to highlight the blurred line between history and fiction. In one of McEwen’s best known works, Untitled (Jeff, Nicole, Macaulay, Bill, Rod, Marilyn, Malcom), he used the over-familiar format of the obituary to create momentary ruptures of accepted reality.

Adam McEwen was born in Great Britain in 1965 and currently lives and works in New York.

Expanding its model of a collaborative platform for presenting and experiencing contemporary art, SEVEN will hold its first New York area exhibition in Williamsburg, Brooklyn at The Boiler, April 28 – May 20, 2012. Launched in 2010 by seven galleries from New York and London (BravinLee programs, Ronald Feldman Fine Arts, Hales Gallery, Pierogi Gallery, Postmasters Gallery, P.P.O.W, and Winkleman Gallery), SEVEN is a unique initiative committed to presenting artworks on their own terms and providing an intimate, personal way to engage the viewer.

Seven @ SEVEN will present solo projects by one artist from each of the participating galleries. Featuring major installations, paintings and sculptures, the exhibition will fill The Boiler’s cavernous space in a co-curated, dynamic presentation. This emphasis on cooperation rather than competition is a founding principle of SEVEN that truly puts the art viewing experience ahead of all other considerations.

Hales Gallery presents Chariots of the Gods, 2009 by Hew Locke. The work draws on Locke’s memories of the Museum of Mankind, London, an eclectic museum, which in its time focused on anthropology. The piece incorporates key exhibits from this museum including the famous Moai figure from Easter Island known as Hoa Hakananai’a, Benin bronzes, Buddhist masks, Inca mummies and Aztec serpents. Locke absorbs and reconfigures this exotic imagery turning them into a heretical motif that is both instantly recognisable and otherworldly. This mythical Coat of Arms mimics those of ex-colonial countries who adopted this Western way of identification. Hew Locke lives and works in London. Locke’s work is included in various prestigious museum collections around the world including the Tate (London), British Museum (London) and the Miami Art Museum (Miami).
