Englishman/ Scotsman/Australian/American/New Yorkcan – but most important- international artist, Adam McEwen, stopped in for a visit. The GMF will be hosting McEwen and his work from April 13, 2012 – July 28, 2012.

McEwen, former obit writer for the Daily Telegraph talked about his transforming that job into art by writing elaborate obits about well-know people who were still alive.
“If it’s in print, it’s real,” McEwen said. He liked the idea that people would wonder, for a split second, if Bill Clinton was really alive.

“These obits are melancholy but not morbid,” he said.

Over the years McEwen has become an expert at graphite, using the material in his sculptures of everyday things.

“Like an ATM … every thing I choose is some kind of object that is generally rooted and thread into our daily life. You know, everyone knows what an [AMEX] card looks like. You take something very familiar that we all know and make it yours,” McEwen said. “It makes you feel alive.”

McEwen was born in London in 1965 and attended Oxford in 1987 where he received his bachelor’s in English literature.

He then studied at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, Cali.

He lives and works in New York City.

Stay tuned for more updates.

As part of The Goss-Michael Foundation’s role in supporting and cultivating the arts within the community we continually seek new ways to expand our programs and take on the responsibility of bringing the art out of the studio and into the classrooms. We are committed to promoting a strong and focused educational program aimed at high school and university education, continuing education and also offers programs for educators and professional development.

For more information please email Brenda Matamoros, educational programmer, at Brenda@gossmichaelfoundation.org.

THE GOSS-MICHAEL FOUNDATION’S OUTREACH PROGRAMS …

SCHOLARSHIPS

The Goss-Michael Foundation offers scholarships annually to students in the DFW area and throughout Texas in order to assist high school seniors with the challenging costs of pursing a visual arts education at the college level. All scholarships are merit-based in the amount of $5,000 and upon acceptance, applied toward tuition at the student’s chosen college or university. In addition to the funding, the recipients of the visual arts scholarships will have one piece of art framed and displayed at The Goss-Michael Foundation and will be featured on the Foundation website and monthly newsletter. Consideration for each award in based on artistic and scholastic achievement, leadership, and school and community participation. Every year, recipients are selected by a distinguished panel of judges chosen for their reputation and professionalism in the art and music industry.

The GMF is also launching a new $5,000 scholarship geared to all college and university enrolled students who are working on their degree in the Arts. The recipient will also receive a membership to the GMF for one year and be featured on The Foundation’s website and monthly newsletter.

STUDENT ART CONTEST

The Goss-Michael Foundation annually organizes a themed student art contest. This opportunity is open to all public, private and home-schooled high school students in the Dallas/Ft. Worth are who are enrolled in the 9th through 12th grade and excel in the disciplines of photography, drawing, print-making, film and mixed media. Finalists’ works are displayed for two weeks at the Foundation in a special student exhibition. First, second and third place prizes are awarded by a judge with a professional art background.

ARTIST TALKS AND LECTURES

With each new exhibition, The Goss-Michael Foundation often has the exciting opportunity to welcome the featured artist(s) to Dallas. Since 2007, the Foundation has had the privilege of hosting some of the leading British Contemporary artists including Tracey Emin, Marc Quinn, Tim Noble & Sue Webster, Richard Patterson, Michael Craig-Martin and Nigel Cooke. While here, the artists attend book signings, give tours of their exhibitions, participate in public lectures often held in partnership with the Dallas Museum of Art, the Nasher Sculpture Center of Dallas Contemporary and – on occasion – hold public art demonstrations or performances.

TOURS

Tours of the exhibitions are available by appointment for individuals, school groups and organizations. Preferably scheduled a week in advance, private tours are given Tuesday through Friday between 10:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. and last approximately 45 minutes.

LIBRARY

The Goss-Michael Foundation library and archive is available by appointment. This serves as a resource for the study of contemporary art. The library consists of an expanding collection of books, DVD’s, video, periodicals and online computer access. Access to the library is available by appointment only with valid student I.D.

TEACHER PREVIEWS

To nurture education The Goss-Michael Foundation holds special teacher previews to introduce forthcoming exhibitions and activities. These events are designed to give an opportunity to teachers and group leaders to meet with colleagues and The Goss-Michael Foundation staff as well as discover the range of opportunities and resources available through the education and public program.

Christina Rees

Curator of the Galleries, TCU

Angust Fairhurst (October 4, 1966 – March 29, 2008), a critically acclaimed yet often more low-profiled member of the Young British Artists, was a thoughtful, playful artist with a deceptively dark and doleful sensibility, along with a strong appreciation of humor and the absurd. He attended Goldsmiths College with Damien Hirst, one of his closest friends, and was in the seminal British DIY group show Freeze, organized by those classmates in 1988.

Over is his career, Fairhurst worked in video, installation, photography, painting, and sound, and the image of a gorilla was a repeated motif in his work.

Much quoted (and apologies for the Wiki nature of this), but I must add: Sir Nicholas Serota, director of the Tate gallery, said: “Angus Fairhurst was always deprecating about his own talent, but he made some of the most engaging, witty and perceptive works of his generation and was an enormously influential friend of other British artists who came to prominence in the early nineties.”

Represented by Sadie Coles HQ in London, Fairhurst exhibited extensively throughout the world. Some select exhibitions include: Brilliant! New Art From London, at the Walker Art Centre, Minneapolis, Apocalypse, at The Royal Academy, London, Casino 2001, at S.M.A.K. in Ghent, Belgium, and of course the much lauded and controversial Sensation, a world-touring show of the Saatchi Collection.

FWCA is very proud to present one of Fairhurst’s most important sculptures, “A Couple of Differences Between Thinking and Feeling,” first exhibited in the exhibition In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida at Tate Britain in 2004. The piece is on generous loan to us courtesy of the Goss-Michael Foundation, Dallas.

We at FWCA feel the need to display this melancholy, droll, introspective sculpture in isolation, free from from any visual or psychological static. It will stand alone as a tribute to this wonderful artist we lost all too soon.
